Sheets, (OUT FOR EXHIBIT)
I live in a part of Ireland, the Beara Peninsula, that is completely drenched with ancient monuments and stories that permeate my work. Lately I’ve been preoccupied with the idea of An Cailleach (the Hag) and this plate is one of a series of pieces that explores her different forms.
The appearance of An Cailleach in our stories often represents an attempt to subjugate and subdue some aspect of femininity. An Chailleach isn’t An Chailleach until someone with power decides that she is. My work is about taking that power and giving it back to women who are sadly subject to its oftentimes tragic consequences.
‘Sheets’, in turn, is a modern take on traditional Romantic era decorative plates. Such plates would have traditionally depicted scenes of the upper classes, enjoying a moment in their lives deemed worthy of immortalisation. Sheets takes a different perspective on this tradition by painting a beautifully ordinary scene of a trans woman doing her ironing.
A slab built and hand painted decorative plate with slip trail detailing.
Please note that this is a handmade art piece and so will have irregularities and a personality that commercial pottery will not. This piece is made from a professional grade white stoneware clay fired to 1250C. After a bisque fire, decoration was hand painted in a loose style with underglaze, finished with a transparent glossy glaze and fired for a second time.
Approximate size: 20cm x 27.5cm x 2.5cm
Weight: 616g
This art piece is completely unique and has all of its own curves and bulges and perfect imperfections.
Please note: wipe clean and never place into a dishwasher
Design
Inspired and informed by traditional ceramic shapes, but slab, pinch or coil-built to create a modern take on a traditional vessel. Each piece is handmade and bisque-fired, then decorated with loose paintings on each piece to create an original work of art.
The illustrations are inspired by all sorts, including racy scenes on popular TV .
